Taxes by Angelica

Taxes are a huge part of our lives.  We need to pay them even if we don't want to.  Taxes started becoming a part of the American life ever since America tried to win independence from England.  Americans accept being taxed because they know that the money will be used to help the country as a whole.

Taxes are a financial charge on an individual by a state or at the federal level and can be paid in money.  When the colonies first started to settle in America, the British controlled them.  To make money for Britain, the King of England taxed the colonies through things like the sugar act and the stamp act.

There are quite a fex types of taxes that we are subjected to today: sales tax, an income tax, and an inheritance tax, etc.  A sales tax is is a charge on products that are purchased.  When someone goes shopping and buys clothes, a certain amount of tax is charged.  Income tax charges someone's income.  A percentage of money is taken out of someone's paycheck.  An inheritance tax is a tax on the money one may inherit.

Sales taxes don't have to be paid if someone has a tax-exemption card.  In some areas like New Jersey, the tax on clothes and shoes don't have to be paid in Garden State Plaza.  There is also a date in some states where nothing in the mall is taxed.  On those days, the mall becomes extremely crowded.

Even though people don't enjoy paying taxes, they help the country.  The taxes we pay go to the government and that money is paid for programs that are important like educational programs, welfare programs, health programs, and even NASA.  Taxes can be dreadful to pay, but we'll always have to remember they're used for a good cause.
