Baby Dragon by Katherine

Some people say that our kind is very cruel an dnot helpful, but others say we can be of great use.  We are big, powerful, and hot.  We can get very, very hot.  Can you guess who we are?  We are dragons.

My family and I live high up in a mountain to guard the golden apple trees, which the king commanded us to guard.  Even though two or three dragons can easily destory the entire kingdom in a few days without a problem, my fellow citizens obey all of the king's rules as long as the supports our town with enough food.  What do we eat?  Don't get shocked, but we eat the same food that people eat.  We eat animals, but we never, ever eat humans.

Okay, enough description about the dragons, let's talk about the main character of this whole thing, me!  My name's Esme.  I'm still five years old, I still can't control the ifre bolt of my throat, and I can't fly well.  Young dragons like me go to school everyday just like humans.  We learn how to fight and control the fire bolt.  It may sound easy but it requires us to study and work hard a lot.

In the beginning, I briefly mentioned about our family or town's job.  It's to guard the golden apple trees.  The king has a total of 25 of them and he adores them.  If even a single apple gets stolen, he cries for the "poor apples" for weeks.  That's why he offered us food to trade with the guarding thing.  Our cooperation worked out well for more than 20 years and gave many dragons jobs.

My dad and mom are very cheerful about whatever I'm doing.  On the day I failed the spitting fire test, they encouraged me to pursue training.  They were the first ones to teach me how to fly.  I'm still not an expert at flying, but I do fly better than some of my fellow schoolmates.  I love my parents!

Now that I just talked about praticing spitting fire and flying, I want to tell you a story.  My school had an annual treasure-search game.  The rules were simple, no walking, only flying was allowed.  We were expected to find small pieces of paper with names of prizes on it.  Then, at the end of the game, the winners get the real treasure, the objects that are mentioned on the paper.  Just last year, something weird happened, all of the treasure paper flew away because of a strong wind.  We all had to use our full power, flying and surviving the different regions.  I found the biggest prize, a ticket to the Royal Parade.  Everyone envied me the whole week and I enjoyed the fame.

I have goals in my life.  I want to be an explorer and learn about the world instead of staying indoors.  Until I complete my goal, I wake up everyday and dream about it and take one more step closer to it becoming a reality.
