Taxes by Angelica

Taxes are a huge part of our lives.  We need to pay them even if we don't want to.  Taxes started becoming a part of the American life ever since America tried to win independence from England.  Americans accept being taxed because they know that the money will be used to help the country as a whole.

Taxes are a financial charge on an individual by a state or at the federal level and can be paid in money.  When the colonies first started to settle in America, the British controlled them.  To make money for Britain, the King of England taxed the colonies through things like the sugar act and the stamp act.

There are quite a fex types of taxes that we are subjected to today: sales tax, an income tax, and an inheritance tax, etc.  A sales tax is is a charge on products that are purchased.  When someone goes shopping and buys clothes, a certain amount of tax is charged.  Income tax charges someone's income.  A percentage of money is taken out of someone's paycheck.  An inheritance tax is a tax on the money one may inherit.

Sales taxes don't have to be paid if someone has a tax-exemption card.  In some areas like New Jersey, the tax on clothes and shoes don't have to be paid in Garden State Plaza.  There is also a date in some states where nothing in the mall is taxed.  On those days, the mall becomes extremely crowded.

Even though people don't enjoy paying taxes, they help the country.  The taxes we pay go to the government and that money is paid for programs that are important like educational programs, welfare programs, health programs, and even NASA.  Taxes can be dreadful to pay, but we'll always have to remember they're used for a good cause.

Coping with Disappointment by Mike

There was a time when I expected to have one of the best experiences of my life, but something happened that ruined everything.  I was going to me some of my family who I haven't seen for two years, but something suddenly changed.

It was a sunny Friday, when my family and I all piled into the car to ride to Ithaka, where my uncle and my aunt lived.  I was going to stay there for two nights and three days to visit them, and to get a tour of Cornell University, because my uncle was one of the professors there.  I was expecting the weather to be nice and sunny the whole time there, because my dad said that we were going to have fun playing in the yard that was as big as a football field.  I hoped that it was going to be one of the best days of my life.

We drove for about wto and a half hours until we finally arrived in the town of Ithaka.  When we arrived, we were greeted by my aunt, uncle, and their baby who was about one year old.  We had our lunch inside their house.  We had a ramen party, which meant that we all had as much ramen noodle as we wanted, except of course the baby.

When we were full, we all piled into the car to get a tour of Cornell University.  I was amazed at how large and beautiful the university was.  It was so beautiful that the time was flying and I thought one hour was one minute.  By the time evening came, we arrived at a hotel to eat our dinner and sleep.  In the hotel bed, I was so excited about having a BBQ party the next day.

The next day, I looked out the window and got stumped.  It was raining.  I hoped that the weather would not be so stormy so that we could have a party later that evening.  Like the day before, we had a tour, except that we had to stay inside or wear our poncho while traveling from place to place.  It was about 5:00PM, and I got stumped again.  It was still raining.  That meant no party.  No yard.  No soccer.  No running around like a maniac.  All my anticipation turned into dust, like a tree turning into smithereens.

We didn't get to have a party, so my uncle had a barbecue inside!  My uncle brought the grill inside and let the smoke out through the windows.  How clever of him.

I guess I really got over the dissappointment of being let down by the weather.  To cheer myself up, we had ice-cream & cake.  I didn't have a horrible day after all, but not a great day either.  However, I learned to always look at the weather forecast before a special occasion.

Video Games by Diane

Video Games have become more popular than ever over the last decade.  Children at about the age of 7 are starting to play as well as adults.  It is true that parents amy feel that video games are not beneficial for their children.  However, this is mainly because most parents notice the few minor poitns about video games.  But there are plenty of facts about the usefulness of video games that parents sould take note of.

Over the years video games have become more advanced and require more brain work.  When one plays a game, one's brain is constantly at work and alert.  Popular games such as Halo 3 and Guitar Hero keep players in this state.  As a result, one may have faster reflexes, develop increased motor skills, and dexterity.  Recently, people all ages were able to exercise while playing games such as Dance Dance Revolution and Wii Fit.  Dance Dance Revolution was even placed in schools for student's gym exercise classes and the Wii was placed in many homes for daily exercise by adults and children.  Video games are useful for exercising physical  and mental abilities.

In addition to video games being useful, they are a great way to make friends on online gaming.  Due to the large population of people that play video games, if one enjoys video games one can share the same fondness with another person.  A close friendship can be made between the two people.  Parents should realize that they should not exclude children from video games because they enjoy it and children can easily relate to people because so many people play them.  Video games are actually very useful to children and teens.

Parents claim that video games are the cause of their children's eye problems.  However, video games aren't the only things that may agitate a person's eyes.  Reading in the dark or staring at the computer for hours can cause a person's eyes to hurt, as well.  Unlike books and the computer, video games do not hurt one's eyes as much.  Because video games keep a person active and moving constantly, a person can get tired by an hour or two so they would take a break.  However, reading a book or playing the computer keeps a person in the same spot for hours which can lead a person's eyes to hurt.  Video games are very different from other activities and people should give attention to that.

Clearly, video games are not as harmful as people think they are.  Video games give advantages to people and people should take them.  Video games give a person a fun way to exercise their  brain and body.  Also they can help bring people closer together as friends and are not as painful to the eyes, unlike books and computers.  Therefore, parents should not be concerned or worried that video games are causing harm to their children.  Video games are a fun experience for both children and adults.

Animal Instincts by Dexter

I would be a dog.  Not just any dog, but I would be a dog living in the upper east side.  That would be a fantastic life.  I like dogs and had many dogs when I was young.  Also, I used to think about dogs' minds and what they are seeing.  This one day is going to be awsome and it will be a special experience for me.

I would be an upper east side dog.  The upper east side is in Manhattan.  People who are all rich and famous live in the upper east side.  They like dogs and are crazy about dogs.  Dogs there have their own fortunes; they have cars, houses, stewards and millions of dollars worth of property.  So I would be an upper east side dog, not just any dog.

I would eat foods that I never eat.  I'd swim in my pool and go tanning.  I'd ride a luxury Ferrari sportscar.  Also, I'd learn the languages of many animals, and after I become a human, I would talk with all the animals.  I would be a super star and I'd be the best veterinarian because I'd be able to speak with the animals.  I'd spend my money for all dogs in the world that don't have food, have disease or are going to die.  I'd help all the dogs and I'd make a written pledge about no more fights with cats and have peace.

If I become a dog, I'd miss my body.  The dog's body would be uncomfortable.  I wouldn't be able to play computer game, open a refrigerator and catch something.  That would be a stressful life.  But if I can live longer than one day, then I'd just stay as dog for a few days more.  Because I'd be an upper east side dog, everything would be easier and funnier than how.  I wouldn't have to work or study.

Historical Mystery by Tony

No one knows what happened to the body of Hitler.  It's mysterious so I began to look up some information to find out what had happened to the body.  The problem is, there was no one that I could talk to about Hitler so I went to a spiritual medium.  There, a woman can connect and communicate with the spirits of the dead.

The first thing I saw when I got to the medium's shop was a room with two chairs and a desk.  The woman told me to sit down.  I looked at her and saw that she was old because she had wrinkles on her face.  She was short and I could only see her face when she sat down in a chair.  She has white hair and her glasses were huge.  I asked her if she can connect with the spirits of the dead and she said yes.  I thought about what connection I could make that would provide clues about the body of Hitler.  As I was thinking, I realized I can connect with a Nazi soldier.  I was familiar wth one from reading history books.  His name was Franz Pretzel.  I told the woman to connect to him.  It took some time and after a few minutes she started talking.  She wasn't talking to me but to the Nazi soldier with whom she connected.  I told the woman to ask him about the body of Hitler.  Soon the woman replied for the Nazi soldier.  She said, "The body of Hitler is mysterious to everyone but I have witnessed his death.  He was out for a walk one day and he walked toward the end of a cliff.  I was going toward him but suddenly he jumped off the cliff and I heard him scream.  I ran to where he fell and looked down the cliff but couldn't see his body.  I couldn't see any sign of him and it seemed like he had teleported or something.  The next thing I know, someone pushed me down the cliff and when I looked back, I only saw the big, red, scar on his wrist and then I died."  The woman started crying.  I asked him where it happened and she replied that the cliff was at the Frightenburg Mountain.

I needed some more information so I asked the woman to connect with the Hitler's dog (German shepherd).  A few minutes later, she started barking at me like a dog and after a few barks, it was talking.  "Hey you!  Why did you call me?"  I said that I needed to know where the body of Hitler disappeared to.  "Well, after I put a big, red, scar on his wrist, he rushed outside.  It was bleeding really badly but he didn't seem to care.  That's all I remember."

Big, red scar?  I remembered that the Nazi soldier saw the scar when he was falling off the cliff.  I ran outside the shop and traveled to the Frightenburg Mountain.  I reached the cliff after some few walks and stepped toward the edge of the cliff.  I looked at the ground and saw a little red dot.  It was hardened blood.  I realized that Hitler started bleeding when his dog made a scar on his wrist.  Maybe he was still bleeding that time.  I follows the track of the blood and it was leading to the forest.  I went through until the track of the blood was cut.  I sat down and put my hands on the ground and the leaves started to move.  I pushed down on the leaves and it dropped into the hole beneath it.  I looked down and saw a human skeleton.  I looked at the skeleton and I noticed that on his wrist was a mark of a bite of a dog.  Than I concluded that it was Hitler.

I took out the skeleton and laid it on the ground.  I didn't call the police because I would be questioned a lot which would be really annoying.  So I brought it to the nearest river and dropped it gently.  The skeleton floated down the river and later, someone found it and reported to the police.  Than the oplice examined the skeleton and found out that on his skull, there was a carving that wrote "Hitler."

This is where I want to go by Sue

Dear Mr. Fabbo,

For the class field trip, I would like to go to Six Flags.  It would be educational if the class reads the brochures about the amusement park.  We could earn money by holding a bake sale and a car wash.

Six Flags would be fun with all the roller coasters.  There is also something called, "Fly me to the Moon."  It is a 3-D movie, and the seats move!  Other places won't be that much fun.  For example, zoos aren't a good place beacuse some people (especially girls) might think zoos smell bad.  Six Flags does not smell bad.

Once, I went to Six Flags, and I rode a roller coaster called Kingda Ka.  I had to wait almost two hours to ride it, so if we go there, we should go early.  I rode other rides too.  I even rode bumper cars with my dad!  Six Flags is a big place, so I think that two teachers and two parent chaperones should go along just in case.

I hope you will think about my idea, Mr. Fabbo.  If you say yes, you should be one of the teachers accompanying the students.

Sincerely,

Sue

TV. vs Books by Chanju

Today, thanks to the development of technology, people can have easy access to television.  As people watch TV more and more, it gradually takes the place of books.  Of course, TV gives people information and news; however, books are still more important than TV.

The first reason is that TV is a passive medium while book is an active medium.  People can get any information from books whenever they want, which means that they can find anything from books by themselves.  On the other hand, information from TV is limited.  People can learn some things from TV only when it is available on the air.  Also, people just gain something that the TV gives them, not what they want.

Also, people cannot get more information from TV.  TV doesn't give them all that they want.  However, books have a lot of information people can choose from.  So, they can have more detailed information by reading books.  In books there are many things people want to know, and people can keep books for a long time.

I receive some information from books better than from TV, as well.  For example, the book, Farenheit 451, teaches me that "books are necessary for people."  In the book, people cannot read books because it is illegal.  Their lives without books are very vain.  They always watch TV, which gives them nothing.  It makes them live without goals.  If someone reads books, the books are burnt.  Because there are no books, people do not think about anything, so they cannot do anything by themselves.  They just live the same lives everyday.  Not reading books makes their lives terrible.  This book teaches me that books are very important.

However, many children do not read books but watch TV and movies.  For these children, many interesting books are published each year.  For instance, children learn lessons from picture books.  Some teaching books such as the Talmud are made into comic books.  So, kids can be interested in the book and understand its concepts more easily.  Also, there are many interesting books like three-dimensional books.  Through these books, children can learn something easily with fun.

Books make people think but TV doesn't.  TV just gives some information.  Without thoughts, people cannot live.  Therefore, books, which gives them whatever they want, are more important than TV.

Explanatory Writing by Jaemin

Hiphop has become one of the most popular music genres.  However, hiphop does not refer to music genres but rather to a culture.  There are four main aspects of this culture: MCing, DJing, B-boying, and Graffiti.

MCing, which is rapping itself, is the most well-known part of hiphop.  To explain, the word MC stands for "Microphone Checker," but sometimes people account it as "Move the Crowd" to mention a great MC.  There are three main factors of MCing: rhyme, flow, and message.  Rhyming is very important to MC.  Proper use of rhyme bestows an MCing rhythm.  Here is an example:

"He robbed another and another and a sister and a brother, tried to rob a man who was DT undercover" - from Slick Rick's "Children's Story"

There are rhymes between "another" and "brother," and even "undercover," whith little change in pronounciation, making rhyme with "another" and "brother."  Rhymes mak ea song rhythmical.  Flow is difficult to be explained; it is a combination of mood and emotion of MCing.  Great MCs have their own flows.  Finally, all rap contains messages.  Unlike other songs, rap has long verses and is very liberal in expression.  Therefore, rap delivers a important message, such as a social message, easily.

As there is a conductor in an orchestra, there is a DJ for MCs and B-boys.  DJing, which is also known as turntabling, has a role of a conductor in an orchestra.  MCs MC and B-boys dance for the DJs.  However, these days, DJing is often performed alone.  DJs (DJ stands for Disk Jockey) train expert skills and develop their own skills.  DJing is becoming a genre of music itself.

Many people might be surprised by a B-boys' performance because B-boys seem as if they float in the air.  B-boy's "B" stands for break-dance.  There are three kinds of dances in B-boying: breaking, popping, and locking.  Breaking is the most well-known kind of B-boying.  It is similar to acrobatics.  Popping is dance that uses joints.  Dancers move their joints separately to the rhythm.  Locking is a dance with exaggerated movement.  Unlike DJing, B-boying became independent very early on.  B-boys, who danced for the MCs originally, have made their own position.  They hold BOTY (Battle Of The Year) annually and compete their skills.

Many people might not be able to find direct connections between graffiti and hiphop, but graffiti is a part of the hiphop culture.  Many graffiti artists express themselves and their crews through graffiti.  Although graffiti artists are not very famous yet, many graffiti artists make crews and show wide activities.

Hiphop, which originated from African-Americans, has now become world-wide culture, and is still increasing its influence.  It is combined with other cultures or activities such as basketball.  Teenagers who wear so-called 'hiphop fashion' demonstrate how popular this culture is.

Baby Dragon by Arisa

My favorite story that my parents told me when I was young was about the Legendary King Dragon.  He protected the treasure in the tall tower in the Emerald Kingdom, far from the knights.  In a battle with the knights, he used his fire to attack and won victory.  With his persuasion, the knights agreed to keep peace... I don't know the rest of the story, but I bet they lived happily ever after...

I may be the dragon prince here, but...

My parent dragons died when I was small.  My uncle dragon has helped me since, but I can't help back.  Though I am a prince, I can't fly or breathe fire to protect the treasure in the tall tower.  Other dragons make fun of me, calling me useless.

I am always lonely, unlike the Legendary King Dragon; oh, I wish I could be like him.

My eyes slowly open because of the light that is pouring out from the little hole in the wall.  I rub my eyes and take a look around.  "Just as I thought, I'm still at my uncle's place."  I think.  "And I'm going to stay here the whole day... again."  I don't want to go outside.  I know what I would have to encounter if I go out: the other dragons will laugh at me for my big, long, and useless tail, waiting for me to roar back (though they know I can't breathe fire due to my dry throat.)

Instead of being picked on, I'd rather stay here.  "Though I am the prince here, I cannot fulfill my duty to protect the treasure," I think.  I looked up from the high window to where the tall tower is; this is where the treasure is, and where I'm supposed to be instead of those tough-looking dragons up there.  Well, who cares?  They don't need me, and have enough dragons to replace my spot.

I walked back to my comfty pile of straw and lie down.  "This is the place for me."  I mumble, and before I know it, I fall into a deep sleep.  Suddenly, I wake up to the rusty smell.  When I open my eyes to take a look, I found out what it is: The whole town is wrapped in fire; fire roar out from the windows, and I see everything run outside to the tower, shouting: "The knights have come!"

Quickly I jump from the straw pile and burst out of the door before the fire can reach me.  I hear the noises of the horses galloping this way.  "I don't want to fight; I'd be no match for them alone..." I think.  Instead, I run to where everyone else is heading.  When I get under the tower, I quickly hide in the bushes.  There, I see many dragons lying on the ground, but some still fighting from up in the sky.  "They're protecting the treasure..." I say to myself.  "Everyone's oging to the main top of the tower.  I must go too.  Besides, what can I do alone?"  So I run through the long stairs leading up to the top and think, "It's weird that they have stairs for a dragon's tower... at least they're helpful."

By the time I reached the top, I see no one that remain standing.  Everyone lies flat on the surface of the rocky floortop.  I felt big shock.  The only thing I hear in the dead silence is the only blow of the wind.  With worry for the treasure, I run to where the treasure box is.  There, I see one man in silver amor holding a big sword.  The lights of the fire around light his face; though he is alone, he looks very tall and mighty, like the Legendary Dragon.

Breaking the dead silence, the man says to me: "You, with those green eyes...  You must be the Emerald Dragon guarding the treasure."  I paused for a moment.  "Guarding?  Well, I'm not a useful prince at all," I think in my heart.  But I cannot say that...  I cannot give up, for the dragons who fought, for myself, for my kingdom.  "Yes, as you said, I am the guardian of this treasure.  I am not strong, but still little.  I cannot breathe fire, fly, or do anything a mighty dragon does.  But I shall defend it, man, and I will do what I can for my kingdom."

The man's face suddenly lit up, looking directly into my eyes.  "You, the little one, are mighty in heart.  I cannot give upon this treasure."  he slowly holds up the small box in his hand and turns it to the outside of the tower.  "But, I will give you a chance.  I will drop this box out of this window.  If you catch it, it shall be yours."  This was a challenge for me, who cannot fly.  But stlil, I answer, "then I shall catch it."

The man's hand lets the treasure loose, and the box starts to fall.  I dash to the end of the tower...  My tail swings in midair as my wings open wide, the fire that remains blows out from the swing.  There, on the edge of the wall, I grip my tail around the box.

This is how I saved the treasure.  I no longer feel lonely, but have courage in my heart.

Legend says that heros are big, mighty, and strong.  However, this is not what is most important to heros, but courage strong enough to run out with broken wings, to protect one's kingdom.  My heart is no long lonely, for I have courage and pride with me now.  Peace has come back in the dragon hero who was once without flame or flight.

NASA: Benefit or Waste? by Ryan

The United States government gives the NASA Space agency several billion dollars each year, but schools across the nation want the government to disperse the money so that they can afford textbooks for the students.  However it is my belief that we should still fund billions of dollars to NASA for them to continue their arduous work.

NASA has made the world a smaller place.  currently with two rovers on Mars, we will be able to assess whether or not Mars is a congenial place for us to live.  We are now entering the Space Age, but what's the point of calling it the Space Age if we are not exploring space?  NASA has benefited the way we live and should continue to do so.

With the help of NASA, satellites were launched to space.  Cellphones which are currently popular would be useless without them.  Without NASA, we would have to rely on pegeons.

With the money from the United States government, NASA has been able to send two rovers to Mars.  If we are to abandon this mission by dearth of money, we will be giving up the steps to get out of the box in which we are living.  there has been news that water existed on mars in the past.  Without the funds given by the government, we wouldn't have this kind of news now or in the future.  Who knows, if the funds really pay off, we could be living in Mars in the next couple of decades.

Without knowing anything about space, it would be *** to call this age, The Space Age.  In order to know more about space, NASA must continue.  Schools might say textbooks are the only way in which students can learn, but this is not always true.

NASA has upgraded our lifestyles in many different ways.  Many fundamental items which we use today are the results of NASA's research.  In order for us to leave Earth and launch into space, the government must fund the NASA Space program.

Goals by Ryan

Goals are things we should always keep in mind.  As a fourteen-year-old teenager, I currently have many goals that I want to achieve.  Within a year, I would like to make new friends and make the tennis team.  Within five years, I would like to apss the driving test and be enrolled into an Ivy league college, ideally Cornell.  I would also like to be ranked number one in America for tennis, if that's possible.  Within ten years, I would like to find a job that will allow me to live happiily and without stress in the East Hill.

I recently moved to a new district this past week, and I am now attending Northern Valley Demarest Highschool.  I feel this will be a great time for me to begin working on my first goal, and make new friends.  I would like to be friends with all of the incoming freshmen.  As a freshmen, I would like to try out for the tennis team and be first singles on the varsity team, however, it will be challenging since I will be new to the team.

The next five yeras will be the most challenging years of my life.  They will decide how I will live in the future.  For example, in the next couple of years, i can be the person driving a Ferrari or just watching my friends driving it because I'd failed my driving test.  I feel the next five years all depend on how well I do on test.  The SAT will decide if I will get into a college which willd be a big part of my life.  Entrance into Cornell, my ideal college, will be decided by my SAT scores, and my GPA.

Though I haven't quite realized my ten-year goals, I know that I would like to get a job which will continuously make me rich throughout my life.  For example, if I coul be a doctor, a lawyer, or a tennis pro, then I might be able to live happily in the East Hill.

It's not just "Oh I want to do that!" and make that as a goal.  In order for a goal to be real, hard work will pay off.  If I do not achieve these goals succesfully, I will not be able to live happier than I think I will.

You're an Inventor! by Sue

I have just made a cool new invention called, " The Flooper."  It is my best inventio never.  It makes money!  I am already a millionaire, since I was the first one to use it.  There is only 1 Flooper in the whole world.  It is in America because it only makes american money.

The machine is made from glass.  It has a slot where the money comes out, a scanner to scan your card, and a keyboard to type your name.  On top of the machine is a picture of a dollar sign ($).

The way to use the machine is to scan your card on the scanner.  Next, you type in your first and last name on the keyboard, then, you press "ENTER".  You type in the amount of money you need on the keyboard, then, the money comes out of a small slot.  The limit of money you can have per day is $100.  Remember, only 1 times a day, and you must have a card.

I think that "The Flooper" will be a big hit because all you need is a card to use the machine.  The cards are $1.00 each.  Thieves and bank robbers do not have to steal money from people anymore.  There would not be any poor people left because they would all have money from "the flooper."  They would all have cool clothes and cool objects.

"The Flooper" would soon appear in other countries printing out money.  For example, in Korae, they would print out Korean money.  Everybody would LOVE my new invention!

My Never Again List by Roger

In the past, all humans have mishaps and regrets in their lives that they wish they could fix, but cannot.  I, as well, have regrets.  A couple of years ago, I participated in a spelling bee, which I lost due to my absence of mind.  Also, quite a few years ago, I quit an instrument in my ignorance of a young mind.  These are the things I can not change and for that, are my regrets.

The fact that I lost my spelling bee was very disappoing to me. I made it to the qualification match and when I was entered, I was very excited.  The day of the contest, I made it to the final two contestants.  The pressure was on me.  On the word "potential," I didn't pay attention and lost.  It was a slip-up I couldn't forget.

In regards to the violin, it was an instrument that I never practiced.  I do not know why I even started playing it but all I remember is getting scolded for y lack of interest.  And it was true: my fingers hurt, I never practiced, and I didn't want to play.  I didn't see how much I could've accomplished if I tried, so in the end, I quit which was one of the worst mistakes of my life.

Regrets are there to teach people not to repeat their mistakes.  The spelling bee and the violin were two of my most remembered regrets.  I have many regrets as does everyone else, but I believe they are best remembered rather than forgotten.

Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night by Esther

"Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night is a famous poem by Dylan Thomas.  It is inspiring and yet, has the mixed feelings of sorrow and gallantry.  The poem is about a man who is dying, but is not giving up.  He is fighting against death and is giving in as much effort as he can until it is time for him to surrender.

The beginning of the poem says, "Though wise men at their end know dark is right," which means that old men know when it is time for them to go and that it is the right time.  The subject of this poem is death and it gives the image of a great battle between life and death, hence the quote "Rage, rage against the dying of the light."

The quote, "Do Not Go Gentle in that Good Night" is the crucial part of the entire poem.  I think it means to never give in to any loss and put up a good fight.  Even if you do not suceed, you will still have a relieved and refreshed feeling that you did your very best.  The quote, "Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay." also gives off the determined, fiery spirit a perosn has when they are rebelling against the enemy.

This poem is very inspiring.  Also, because it is about fighting death, it is relaly shocking.  Usually when someone dies, they would hopefully go peacefully, but in contrast, the person in this poem is defying death.  The quote, "Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray," uses dramatic words ("curse," "fierce tears") to bring out emotions from the writing and the reader.  I thought his use of this kind of language added the element of surprise the best, because at first, I thought the fight was about something violent such as war.  More generally, Thomas uses powerful, commanding words to describe the ultimate battle between life and death.

"Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night," is a touching poem to read and was very interesting.  It is inspirational and different.  Not only is it descriptive, but it is also surprising and moving as well.

Baby Dragon by Katherine

Some people say that our kind is very cruel an dnot helpful, but others say we can be of great use.  We are big, powerful, and hot.  We can get very, very hot.  Can you guess who we are?  We are dragons.

My family and I live high up in a mountain to guard the golden apple trees, which the king commanded us to guard.  Even though two or three dragons can easily destory the entire kingdom in a few days without a problem, my fellow citizens obey all of the king's rules as long as the supports our town with enough food.  What do we eat?  Don't get shocked, but we eat the same food that people eat.  We eat animals, but we never, ever eat humans.

Okay, enough description about the dragons, let's talk about the main character of this whole thing, me!  My name's Esme.  I'm still five years old, I still can't control the ifre bolt of my throat, and I can't fly well.  Young dragons like me go to school everyday just like humans.  We learn how to fight and control the fire bolt.  It may sound easy but it requires us to study and work hard a lot.

In the beginning, I briefly mentioned about our family or town's job.  It's to guard the golden apple trees.  The king has a total of 25 of them and he adores them.  If even a single apple gets stolen, he cries for the "poor apples" for weeks.  That's why he offered us food to trade with the guarding thing.  Our cooperation worked out well for more than 20 years and gave many dragons jobs.

My dad and mom are very cheerful about whatever I'm doing.  On the day I failed the spitting fire test, they encouraged me to pursue training.  They were the first ones to teach me how to fly.  I'm still not an expert at flying, but I do fly better than some of my fellow schoolmates.  I love my parents!

Now that I just talked about praticing spitting fire and flying, I want to tell you a story.  My school had an annual treasure-search game.  The rules were simple, no walking, only flying was allowed.  We were expected to find small pieces of paper with names of prizes on it.  Then, at the end of the game, the winners get the real treasure, the objects that are mentioned on the paper.  Just last year, something weird happened, all of the treasure paper flew away because of a strong wind.  We all had to use our full power, flying and surviving the different regions.  I found the biggest prize, a ticket to the Royal Parade.  Everyone envied me the whole week and I enjoyed the fame.

I have goals in my life.  I want to be an explorer and learn about the world instead of staying indoors.  Until I complete my goal, I wake up everyday and dream about it and take one more step closer to it becoming a reality.
